Dass er kommen wird, war schon lange bekannt, nun ist für VIA die Zeit gekommen, den neuen Chipsatz für den Athlon XP Prozessor offiziell vorzustellen. Der KT880 unterstützt Dual Channel DDR400 und soll nach eigenen Angaben von VIA großen Zuspruch durch die Mainboardhersteller erfahren.
Der KT880 unterstützt VIAs DualStream64 Memory Controller, natives Serial ATA/Raid, 6-Kanal Audio, 10/100 MBit Ethernet, acht USB 2.0 Ports und AGP8x. Optional wartet der Chipsatz jedoch auch mit VIAs Vinyl Gold 8-Kanal Audio und VIAs Velocity Gigabit Ethernet auf. Möglich werden diese Features durch weitere Controller und VIAs VT8237 Southbridge, die dem KT880 durch einen 533 MB/s schnellen V-Link zur Seite steht. Der integrierte Raid Controller unterstützt Raid Level 0, Level 1, Level 0+1 und JBOD Konfigurationen.
Mainboards von Asus, Gigabyte und MSI werden nicht lange auf sich warten lassen.

The VIA KT880 chipset brings DualStream64? dual channel DDR400 memory performance and VIA VT8237 South Bridge connectivity to the AMD Athlon XP processor platform. Building on the market leading position of the VIA KT Series, the KT880 offers additional category-leading features such as AGP 8X, 400MHz FSB, Native Serial ATA/RAID, in addition to 8-channel audio and Gigabit Ethernet when paired with VIA companion controllers.
The VIA DualStream64 dual channel DDR400 memory controller achieves impressive memory bandwidths of up to 6,400 MB/s by harnessing intuitive technologies such as an enhanced data prefetch protocol, improved memory branch prediction with a larger on-chip branch table, and tighter read/write turn-around for improved clock timings.
