Ermittelt wird der Verbrauch mit einem entsprechenden Messgerät. Dieses erfasst Verbräuche ab 0,05 Watt, die Abweichung beträgt +/- fünf Prozent. Gemessen wird im Standby, im Leerlaufbetrieb (Desktop) und unter Volllast. In letzterem Fall wird die gleiche Situation genutzt, die auch bei der Messung der Temperaturen unter Last verwendet wird. Die Werte stellen aber lediglich die Spitzen in der jeweiligen Situation dar.

Für das Ermitteln der Akkulaufzeit im Leerlauf und unter Last verwenden wir Battery Eater bei einer Bildschirmhelligkeit von 140 Candela pro Quadratmeter sowie aktiviertem WLAN. Im Leerlauf wird dabei das Leser eines Dokuments simuliert, unter Last werden alle wichtige Komponenten einbezogen. Im Praxistest wird das Gerät zum Surfen im Internet sowie zum Schreiben verwendet. Hinzu kommen mehrere Phasen des Leerlaufs, in denen der Bildschirmschoner nach zehn Minuten, die Bildschirmabschaltung nach 15 Minuten aktiviert wird.
