Was ist schneller: 8 P- plus 8 E-Kerne bei dauerhaft 86 Watt oder 6 P- plus 8-E-Kerne bei dauerhaft 120 Watt? 33 Prozent mehr P-Cores oder 39 Prozent mehr Leistungsaufnahme? Die Antwort lautet: mehr P-Cores.
Im Durchschnitt über die Multi-Core-Testszenarien liegt der Core i9-12900HX im Turbo-Profil des Gigabyte Aorus X17 knapp zwei Prozent vor dem Core i7-12700H aus dem wassergekühlten XMG Neo 15 (E22). Gegenüber der schnellstmöglichen Konfiguration des Core i9-12900HK (6+8 Kerne) im MSI Raider GE76, bei der dauerhaft rund 80 Watt anliegen, ist der HX sogar um 15 Prozent voraus – werden beide bei dauerhaft 65 Watt betrieben, sind es nur noch 4 Prozent.
Das zeigt, dass der große 8+8-Kern-Desktop-Die erst einmal auf Touren kommen muss, um seinen Vorteil gegenüber dem 6+8-Kern-Notebook-Die auszuspielen – möglicherweise der Hintergrund, warum Intel die offizielle Basisleistungsaufnahme von 45 auf 55 Watt angehoben hat. Die HX-CPUs verbrauchen nicht unbedingt mehr, aber sie brauchen mehr, um gegenüber den H(K)-CPUs vorne zu liegen. Jenseits der 80 Watt ist der Vorteil dann sehr deutlich: Mehr Kerne bringen eben auch hier mehr als zusätzlicher Takt.
Wie schnell die Plattform maximal werden kann, ließ sich mit dem Gigabyte Aorus X17 hingegen nicht testen, denn es betreibt die CPU weit von den maximal definierten 157 Watt entfernt – selbst wenn die Grenze im BIOS gesetzt wird. Bei kurzfristig 100 und dauerhaft 86 Watt bleibt der 8+8-Kern-Chip so noch deutlich hinter einem entfesselten Core i9-12900K mit selbem Chip, aber bis weit über 200 Watt Verbrauch zurück.

Auch im Single-Core-Testparcours erringt der Core i9-12900HX den ersten Platz, ganze 4 Prozent schiebt sich die CPU vor den Core i9-12900HK. Derselbe maximale Takt von 5,0 GHz gibt diesen Unterschied auf dem Papier dabei nicht her. Allerdings zeigt sich hier die Schwäche des von Intel im Januar 2022 gestellten ersten Testmusters, dem MSI Raider GE76 mit Core i9-12900HK, erneut: Die CPU kam in diesem System in Single-Core-Lasten nicht auf Tempo, 5,0 GHz lagen nur selten an.
Der Abstand zwischen Core i9-12900HX und Core i7-12700H ist hingegen direkt auf dem Datenblatt sichtbar: Der Core i7 wird von Intel im maximalen Turbo-Takt von 5,0 auf 4,7 GHz eingebremst.

Fazit
Intels Vorstellung der neuen mobilen HX-CPUs mit auf 55 Watt angehobener TDP und bis zu 157 Watt Spitzenverbrauch hatte den Anschein erweckt, dass die Prozessoren mit dem großen Desktop-Die mehr Leistung nur über mehr Verbrauch erreichen werden. Doch der Core i9-12900HX im Gigabyte Aorus X17 liefert eine ganz andere Vorstellung ab: Anstatt ihn mit bis zu 157 Watt zu betreiben, fängt Gigabyte die CPU unter Dauerlast bei 86 Watt im Turbo-Profil ab – und lässt sie mit 8+8 Kernen auf diesem Weg trotzdem vor einem Core i7-12700H mit 6+8 Kernen und dauerhaft 120 Watt (wassergekühlt) ins Ziel rennen.
Eine Erkenntnis im Test lautet damit: Die HX-Serie verbraucht nicht per se mehr, aber sie braucht mehr elektrische Leistung, um H(K)-CPUs auf selbem TDP-Niveau klar in die Schranken zu weisen. Unterhalb von 60 Watt dürfte der 6+8-Kern-Die der H(K)-CPUs effizienter sein, darüber ist es aber der große Desktop-Die – und diese Leistungsbereiche kommen heutzutage immer häufiger auch mobil zum Zuge.
Das soeben Erörterte gilt für Anwendungen, nicht aber für Spiele. In Games schlagen 6+8 Kerne auch heute noch in der Regel 8+8 Kerne, die niedriger takten – und HX-CPUs takten nun mal niedriger als H(K)-CPUs. Mit eigenen Tests konnte die Redaktion das nicht untermauern, weil das Aorus X17 mit einer bis dato nicht in einem anderen System getesteten Grafikkarte (Nvidia GeForce RTX 3070 Ti 105+25 Watt) ausgestattet ist. Ein separater Test des mobilen Grafikchips folgt.
Ein weiterer Aspekt, der in Ermangelung eines parallel vorliegenden H(K)-Testmodells außen vor bleiben musste, ist der Verbrauch der CPU im „Leerlauf“. Der Verbrauch des Core i9-12900HX wurde allerdings protokolliert (minimal 8,5 Watt auf dem Windows Desktop), so dass der direkte Vergleich in Zukunft möglich ist.
ComputerBase hat das Aorus X17 mit Core i9-12900HX von Gigabyte leihweise zum Testen erhalten. Eine Einflussnahme des Herstellers auf den Testbericht fand nicht statt, eine Verpflichtung zur Veröffentlichung bestand nicht.
