Open Source und Freeware: Paint.NET, Open-Shell und Sandboxie erhalten Updates

Mehrere Open-Source-Projekte wie unter anderem Paint.NET, das als verbesserte Alternative zum in Windows enthaltenen Paint dienen soll, das klassische Startmenü Open-Shell und Sandboxie, die Sandbox für das isolierte Ausführen von Programmen, haben ihre Windows-Anwendungen auf neue Versionsstände aktualisiert.

Paint.NET erhält eine kleine Produktpflege

Ursprünglich als Open Source unter der MIT-Lizenz vertrieben, wird Paint.NET seit der Version 3.5 unter der proprietären hauseigenen Paint.NET-Lizenz kostenlos als Freeware zum Download angeboten.

Das erstmals 2004 als Ergebnis eines Studenten-Projekts veröffentlichte Bildbearbeitungsprogramm erhält laut den offiziellen Release Notes die folgenden Aktualisierungen, Optimierungen und Fehlerkorrekturen.

• Fixed a bug when using Crop to Selection where the image would scroll away to the corner
• Fixed a rendering bug in the brush tools that would cause some sections of the brush stroke to be rendered twice, making them darker
• Added the PdnBaseForm.IsAppThemeDark property so that plugins with custom UI can more easily be dark theme aware
• Fixed a rare crash in the rendering engine due to a race condition
• Fixed a crash when using multiple monitors plugged into multiple GPUs from different manufacturers (e.g. AMD vs. NVIDIA), while moving the window between monitors (NotCurrentlyAvailableException)

Nachdem Paint.NET 4.3.3 den Wechsel auf die neueste Laufzeitumgebung .NET 6 und das freie Packprogramm 7-Zip vollzogen hat, bündelt die neue Version Plugins für die Bildformate WebP und AVIF.

Die Installationsroutine basiert auf dem Datenkompressionsalgorithmus LZMA und dem Archivformat 7z von 7-Zip.

Open-Shell 4.4.175 Pre-Release erschienen

Das alternative Startmenü Open-Shell für Windows 10, 8.x und 7 bringt den klassischen Look früherer Betriebssysteme zurück und erfährt mit dem Pre-Release kleinere Änderungen.

Für eine Nutzung in deutscher Sprache muss, wie auf der Projektseite beschrieben, eine Sprachdatei des Vorgängers Classic-Shell in das Installationsverzeichnis oder in den Dateipfad %ALLUSERSPROFILE%\OpenShell\Languages kopiert werden.

Mit Hilfe eines einfachen Workarounds läuft Open-Shell selbst unter Windows 11, auch wenn Microsofts neuestes Betriebssystem offiziell nicht unterstützt wird.

Sandboxie mit neuen Mechanismen

Sandboxie ermöglicht das Installieren und Ausführen von Programmen in einer isolierten Umgebung (Sandbox). Das bedeutet, dass das eigentliche System von den Auswirkungen unberührt bleibt. So lässt sich beispielsweise Software testen, ohne dabei Spuren auf dem System zu hinterlassen oder Schaden zu verursachen.

Die neueste Version erhält „zwei neue Isolationsmechanismen, um die Sicherheit von gehärteten Boxen zu erhöhen“ sowie zahlreiche weitere Optimierungen und Fehlerkorrekturen.
