Guy's don't know if this has been posted here before, sorry if it has. Most reviewers don't even know this and knock Monolith, because F.E.A.R. doesn't support normal 5:4 screen ratios of 17" and 19" LCD Monitors. If you check the options either in the game or at CD install, you'll note 1280 x1024 isn't an option. Monolith is just being conservative. This is an easy change, HOWEVER, not recommended if you don't have an nVidia 16 pipe 6800 or higher card, or Radeon X800GTO or higher card, if you want the high eyecandy settings as well as running in your LCD's native resolution.
Here's the procedure for WINXP (WIN2000 should be the same).
Open C: HD Drive (if that's where you have the game installed).
Open> Documents and Settings Folder
Open> All Users Folder
Open> Shared Documents Folder
Open> Monolith Folder
Open> F.E.A.R. Folder
Find the file labeled 'Settings' It is a .CFG file
Make a copy of the file (CNTRL C)
Paste the Copy in the Window (CNTRL V)
Right click the Copy, hit 'Rename', and rename the file (I renamed it "Original Settings") without quotes, of course smile.gif
Now click the 'Settings.CFG' file. Windows will ask you what program to open it with.
Scroll down to notepad, and click
The File will open as a 'Notepad' file.
Scroll down to screen width and change to '1280'
Scroll down to screen height and change to '1024'
Save and close.
Your done!
Run F.E.A.R., go into profiles>performance>graphics card, and change resolution.
1280 x 1024 will now show up as an option biggrin.gif
Be sure and adjust your effects and settings and run the test settings program to optimize. On my 6800GT, I can run all effects on maximum, FSAA 2X, but soft shadows 'OFF'
Looks and plays awesome wink.gif
Cheers,
MM
