360's operating system uses 32mb
Ps3's uses 43mb of the system memory and 7 of the video, added in to the framebuffer that 360 has dedicated, its down even more.
The final consideration is that 2K can assign memory as they please on 360 as its unified, but if they try and share system to video memory on PS3, theres a performance penalty. Most developers dont bother trying to overcome that issue.
Its only part of the puzzle as i said. PS3's architecture is difficult to work with if you have built a game for 360 and ported it over. There is absolutely no question RSX is slower than xenos either
Wow.... there are so many things wrong with this statement it's kind of hard to pick a spot where to begin.
First of all, anybody with basic knowledge of developing on both platforms will clearly tell you that the Cell Processor (many many times faster than the 360 processor) is much more efficient, than the 360. As a result having 256 memory is actually more than enough and is almost always lent back to the GPU. You failed to mention that as well, that the CPU memory can be shared to the GPU, and again since the Cell is so efficient it usually is.
How you completely missed that the XDR memory in the PS3 isn't unified clearly shows what level of understanding you have on the PS3 architecture... basically none. That's the memory that is almost 5 times faster than the 360 memory........ yeah, you're completely wrong.
What you really failed to mention is that the stick of XDR 256 memory on the CPU of the PS3 is actually faster than the combined 512 RAM in the 360. Having combined memory also causes a bottleneck, that the PS3 easily avoids. For comparison sake I used the new 360 kits we received at work (Kinect ready), and it features the ability to enable a full 1 GB of RAM on the 360. Even then, the PS3 still outperformed the 360.
Why is this? Well you failed to mention one key piece of information:
ps3 ram
256MB XDR RAM @3.2GHz
256MB GDDR3 VRAM @700MHz
xbox360
512 MB GDDR3 RAM @ 700 MHz
I found this basic explanation covers a lot of the beginner level stuff. You might find it incredibly informative:

And as for living in reality, how much actual development testing have you done in your life? I've worked on 4 titles on "next gen platforms" thus far that were released (more pans currently on the fire), all of them when placed on consoles ran twice as fast on the PS3 upon immediate testing. No exceptions. This included 3 Unreal titles and 1 Gamebryo title. We actually had to focus optimization on the 360 alone for a month because the PS3 never dipped below 30 FPS with no optimization.
The issue isn't that a developer has a harder time working with the PS3, this is just not the case and you'd have to be a real amateur at this point to still not get around the PS3 architecture. It's not that complex, and even with a basic knowledge of the SPEs the thing is a pure beast, plain and simple. Stop spreading misinformation please, some people might think you know what you are talking about, and google will not give you actual hands-on experience and testing with the platforms. Sorry kid.
The issue here is that 2K didn't work on the PS3 title, they sent it to Massive Bear:
http://www.massivebear.com/mbport.html Now 2K might feel a bit sensitive with us calling this a port, but that is exactly what it is. When your company works on two platforms, and gets an outsourced company to work on a third platform specifically, that is called porting. That's pretty common.
Towards 2k Specifically (I think the guy I quoted has already been exposed for not knowing anything he is talking about):
The issue I as a PS3 fan have is that this isn't the first time you guys have released an INFERIOR version of a game on the platform I game most on. You can apologize until you are blue in the face, but the fact remains that you guys have done nothing to change this. You outsource the PS3 version instead of hiring people to internally work on the platform. It's just not right. I want to pay for a 2K game, not a 2K port. Stop treating your PS3 fans like dirt. I bought your last game, but this is one time too many.
You guys are a talented bunch of developers who create incredible games. I however will not purchase Mafia 2 on the PS3, because it isn't one of your games. Take that as a compliment, I doubt you want to take credit for the mess that happened with it.
Only two ways to fix my opinion of you guys, and a third that is mandatory:
1) Release a fix that will make the game at least on par visually and other key functions that were cut with the 360 (yes it is perfectly capable of this, it just needs equal amounts of time, which you guys outsourced), and fix the game breaking performance issues
...or...
2) Lower the price of the title by at least 20 dollars, since the PS3 game is not worth full price with the bugs mentioned in this thread (most of which were confirmed by your guys).
The mandatory one:
3) Hire PS3 coders on staff, your PS3 fans deserve as much. If not, at least take your name off the PS3 box. You shouldn't stand by these poor results, and we shouldn't think we are getting a 2K product, when we are getting a mediocore port of a 2k product. If you claim it isn't a port, get Massive Bear to take down Mafia 2 PS3 from their portfolio, since they seem to think they worked on the outsourced PS3 version of your game:

I'm not even getting into the false quotes and fake images. I worked for a publisher before moving to development, I understand this isn't always intentional and when it is... well it's a part of the business. It's like how on the back of the 360 boxes they don't state Native resolutions like the PS3 does, instead stating which resolutions they can upscale to (the equivalent of a blank check). That is much worse and no one complains about that.
It might be tempting to delete this post, but I have it saved and will spread it on other websites if this information is buried. People need to know.
