[ 2/26/2010 2:14:13 AM] I bought the 5770 xxx some days ago... now i notice that it has no working powerplay. i bought it because of its low power consumption paired with high performance! high performance is true with this card. but not the low power consumption in 2D. it actually takes more power than my "old" sapphire HD4770! can you please provide me a bios for my new 5770 XXX that has correctly working powerplay? i am not a beginner with stuff like that. i know how to flash a new bios to a graphics card. (did it several times - and recovered the original bios of a 3870 of a friend that forceflashed the wrong bios) is it true that the warranty is not being aborted by xfx when i flash a new bios to my card? (this is what i have read some time ago somewhere i can`t remember... i think it was when your company was nvidia-only) so i`d like to know these 2 things: 1. can you provide me a bios with correct working powerplay? 157Mhz GPU-/300Mhz Ram-clock. 2. the question about warranty... do i lose it when i change the bios?
[SHAUN_T 2/26/2010 9:07:45 AM] Hi Florian, thanks for your message. If you flash an unofficial BIOS and it damages the card, then yes this will probably void the warranty. However, official XFX BIOS updates will be fine. There are no BIOS updates for your graphics card at the moment though. So when in 2D do the clocks not reduce and has it behaved this way since you first installed the card into your system? Kind regards, Shaun.
[ 2/26/2010 11:36:53 AM] in 2d mode the card behaves like the ati hd4000 generation... so it wastes alot of power because the GPU reduces the clock only to 400Mhz while the ram doesnt reduce the clockspeed at all. normal powerplay on hd5k looks like that in idle: GPU: 157Mhz; Ram: 300Mhz ... my hd5770 runs in idle with 400Mhz GPU/1300Mhz Ram. This results in using much more (more than twice) than the advertized 18Watt idle power consumption for hd5770. all i can do at the moment is to open CCC and enable overdrive - but underclock the card to 600/650mhz. then the ram is running with 650mhz in idle too and the temperature of the gpu falls from nearly 60°C (IN IDLE!) to under 50°C.
[SHAUN_T 2/26/2010 11:52:56 AM] Hi Florian, thanks for the quick response and extra information. Please close any background programs that may be communicating with the card and requiring some power. Also test your graphics card in a different system to see if you encounter the same issues. Kind regards, Shaun.
[ 2/27/2010 2:26:06 AM] the card is running in a really fresh installation of win7 x64 with catalyst 10.2 (installed when i recieved my new card) i found a bios of an xfx 5770 that has the same Subsystem ID as my card (and the same ammount of ram of course
:
http://techpowerup.com/vgabios/65875/XFX.HD5770.1024.091204.html so i flashed it (no need to forceflash) and powerplay is indeed working with this bios of a standard xfx 5770:

http://www.abload.de/img/neuebitmapujfv.jpg take a look at the temperature, too!
this is not a working powerplay in my opinion. (like the advertising and the packaging of this card is telling) the card is getting hotter in idle than my "old" 4770 - so it has to have a higher power consumption. I`m about to send this card back, recieve my 150€ back and buy a standard 5770 1GB for 120€. (and even safe money because my computer doesn`t consume that much power in idle - what it is about 95% of the day)
[ 3/1/2010 6:01:46 PM] have you forgotten me?
[PAULV 3/2/2010 2:44:38 PM] Hi, thanks for your message and for letting us know. No of course not, but looking at your previous message you said you were going to return the card? so did you change your mind? Hope all goes well, however if any queries or problems please keep us posted. Kind regards Paul
[ 3/2/2010 3:11:58 PM] i think i will not return the card. i like the cooler it has and was searching for a card with "stock ati cooler" (for blowing the warm air out). the only thing i am a bit angry about is the fact that the advertising lied to me about the "powerplay". i have to use an original standard 5770 bios for using it... i hope that the RBE tool soon is really supporting the 5770-series so i can change the clockrates and voltage of my card in idle for the original bios. (the original is always the better one... for memory timings for example) are you not able to support me with a bios that just decreases the idle clockrates and voltage to what should be standard in idle-mode? is there an ETA for a new bios that supports this? or a beta-bios? or at least: is it planned to support powerplay at all for this card?
[JAMES 3/2/2010 4:39:37 PM] Hi, thanks for your message, suggest checking the site regularly to look out for information on new versions of the Powerplay program for added support for your version of the card. kind regards, James.
[ 3/2/2010 5:29:27 PM] are you trying to make fun of me? powerplay is not supported by this card because of the bios modification by xfx. (the xxx version) it has nothing to do with any programs! what kind of programs are you thinking of? the standard catalyst you are linking to on this page? BTW: DELETE THIS "powerplay" in the discription:
http://www.abload.de/img/neuebitmapvg41.jpg because it`s a lie.
could you at least answer my questions? (the ones of my last answer too, plz)

[PAULV 3/3/2010 9:59:55 AM] Hi, thanks for your response. No-one is trying to make fun of you Florian. Powerplay can depend on a number of things, mainly the firmware and mainboard paired with. A lot of cards were sent out with updated BIOS`s to stop the powerplay feature as this seemed to cause more issues that anything. And in reality, its not that important. If there is an updated BIOS released from ATI then rest assured, this will be made available, but as of yet, no BIOS`s are planned for release. We are sorry on this, but it really is a case of one or the other here, either the card supports Powerplay and has other issues, or no powerplay and works flawlessly, which would you prefer? We understand that you are not happy with this Florian, but if you feel the need then perhaps best to consider returning the card to the reseller to arrange an exchange/refund. Hope all goes well, however if any queries or problems please keep us posted. Kind regards Paul
