Try to speak english dude!

I can only say to people who wants to understand and using english: Watch your series on tv in english and try to translate a few texts in the subject you want to know anything.

Good idea! But there are also several other possibilities to improve one's English. There's e.g. a lot of online content.

In my opinion THE source for (standardised) British English is the BBC. Have a look at one of their dedicated Homepages: BBC Learning English

Do you know some websites where I can improve my English by talking to people via skype? But for free of course. In past I was used to talk English in online games and I think this way helps a lot but I dont want to play online games anymore. I´m too old for that kind of stuff. And I´d appreciate if you correct my mistakes.

Edit: I´m also looking for tables where I can look up when I have to use in/on/at/for/to and so on. Often I don´t know which of these mentioned words I should use, e.g in sentences like: "in online games, or on online games, or at online games...".

Concerning your questions: there is a very useful tool to help you with them, it's called "Google". Just enter the words "english prepositions" or "Englische Präpositionen" and "Learning English Skype" or "Englisch lernen Skype". Good luck with that!

Concerning your text:

In the past I was used to talk (in) English in online games and I think it helped a lot but I don't want to play online games anymore. I´m too old for that kind of stuff. And I´d appreciate it if you corrected my mistakes.

I object! Even if my english is not perfect, but your seemingly fixed text is not correct either. I agree with the first sentence, but definitely not with the last one. Why would you take past here??

@ekin06:

If clauses: I'd = I would...

I would appreciate it if you corrected my mistakes.

This is a polite way to ask a favour.

There is another possibility to say this:

I will appreciate it if you correct my mistakes. This is kind of a presumtion that we will (for sure) correct the mistakes (of course we do but you cannot be sure ;))

Let's assume another situation: one of the admins closes the thread before we have the possibility to answer you. Then you would possibly write (in another thread of course):

I would have appreciated it, if you had corrected my mistakes (now it is impossible, because the thread is closed).

I forgot: There is also the possibility to say: I'd appreciate it if you could correct my mistakes.

Also thanks for your helpful words @Twisted_River. Google might be helpful, but I thought perhaps you guys have some good advices for me. Nevertheless thank you again.

Don't worry cerasus, even native speakers make mistakes, so nobody expects (the Spanish Inquisition! :evillol:) you to be perfect.

About Google: You should write that you have already tried to find some useful pages but weren't successful or content with the results. Then people will probably be more willing to help you (I guess).

Außerdem würde ich es mal mit Konjunktionen probieren. Vor allem die ersten zwei Sätze klingen abgehackt und nach Schulenglisch. "Next time Ill try not to make any mistakes to ensure that you won't have to discuss it, either" würde mir besser gefallen.

it sounds pretty good. it is fluent and does not have german constructions.
(have to keep the thread alive :D )

Pretty good suggestion Zilpzalp, sounds very non-German (which, in this case, is a good thing). You might want to add an ' to Ill, though.

One other thing: this thread is intended to be in English only (except for some single word/phrase translations for clarification), so next time you should try to write your comments in English, too.

Thank you.

Dude, i didnt even know there is a thread like this. And im here for a few years already ;-)

Still, theres a new topic needed to discuss about ;-)

OK, then I'll give you one.

Has anybody been abroad for a longer time (i.e. minimum six months)?
What country?
Reason?
Short summary of the stay.

I guess this thread is already dead but anyway... Anyone interested to continue this thread? Please? I'd appreciate it...

So... Everybody alright here? I'm kinda new here anyway and need to get used to the forum. I'm more a reader than a writer here though. Besides I didn't find an introduction thread so I'm gonna use this one. ;) Hey, I'm Zerro, I'm new and reading here for a while now but registered just yesterday... Anything else? Nah, gonna let you guys decide if anyone wanna answer me first. :)

welcome on the cb forum. actually there is a thread for newcomers, look here, but not in english.^^

I'd say this forum's community is way too big to have an introductory thread. The atmosphere is far from familiar, at least from an overall point of view. If you'll be traveling across all boards here, you will not often see the same people posting twice. At least that's my impression. There are some frequenters who you will come across more often, of course.
But I'm not trying to say that the atmosphere is bad in general and it's not worth staying. Else I wouldn't have so many posts here and probably would have left behind this forum long ago. One positive thing is the standard of conversations. There are exceptions, of course, and it depends on the boards you're reading, but in general the moderators keep the masses of posts under control relatively well and react to user reports quickly.

My favorites are the 'programming' board and the entire 'miscellaneous' category. The rest I only visit when I see an interesting thread title on the computerbase main page. The hardware boards are too repetitive for my taste and polluted by fanboy discussions.

edit: haha, interesting there even is an introductory thread and I never saw it. Well, too late for me to introduce myself. :P

I think it depends of the sub-forums.
Most of the time I visit the Freizeit and the Spielekonsolenforum.
The people you see there are more familiar to each other.
I think it is different to the Hardware section. There are too many users to be familiar.
But I can't say that for sure, because I don't visit theese forums anymore.

@speedyjoe: Hah, I couldn't find the introduction thread but thanks anyway :)

Ah, okay, so when I'm in the miscellaneous category you're gonna find more people to chat with. Sounds good to me. Absolutely satisfactory. Maybe I need some help with a gaming pc later but not at the moment. Otherwise I'm never gonna be in these categorys anyway. Far to incompetent for these kind of discussions.

Guess it's just like every forum else then? Some people you can chat with and some you shouldn't take to seriously I suppose? From my point of view it's hard anyway to just write something in here cause mostly I read things and even when I decide to answer something before I post it I decide otherwise and just delete the post. Most of the times anyway... But I'd like to have somebody to chat with here because otherwise it's gonna be kind of lonely and boring and I wanna avoid exactly that.
