try out the big bang theory or two and a half men - its even more fun, cause you cant translate some of the hilarious jokes, since most of them are based on wordplay (slang, references, grammar etc).

Or King of Queens, How i met your mother etc. Actually i watch most movies or series in English. German dubbing just gives me the creeps in most cases.

Dutch TV is good. In most cases they dubb too, so it ain't a big suprise that many Dutch people speak English very well.

Quick question.

Am I the only one who thinks german dubs are getting persistantly more worse?! And the totally effed up thing is that I can't find any cinemas screening new movies in english... except if they are screened in really small cinemas or screening rooms.
I can always hear the rumbling noises of the booths across running the dubbed version, while I'm sitting in a screening room with speakers smaller than the speakers I have on my desk.

Seriously... whats up with that?!

I totally agree. If you want to watch the OV, you must be lucky that your cinema shows it.

Many people can't even speak a correct German^^

i have the same problem. If i try to read a english book, i have no bigger problem to understand the context, but there are always some single words i have to look for. And this "looking for" costs time, it waste time in which you want to read the book.. that goes some time longer, and then i´am so angry that i stop to read this book.

I have a similar case at wort. In our office we have some native english speakers (especially from australia), and some rumanians with no german skill, so they speak english too. I have absolutly no problems to understand what they mean or what they want, but if i have to answer or to epxlain anything, it sometimes becomes very funny.

i know this problem from a similar case. In university (history) it might be enough to understand the context, however, when you are preparing a presentation, then you must know the details, too, and that is for me sometimes very difficult.
i hope i didn't make many mistakes, but i have a bad feeling, as harrison ford would say.

Yes, that's a fantastic idea!

All the TV series I watch and almost all books I read are in English. It's (fortunately) not the only foreign language I speak, but it's the one I like most - especially the British English (even though I do not always write or speak that way). Unfortunately I've not yet been in an English speaking country for more than two weeks. That's what I'd need to become more fluent in speaking and more secure with the grammar stuff.

Well, I hope we'll be able to reactivate this thread and have some really interesting conversation.

To be honest, I don't like the Polish way either. For those who never had contact to Polish TV - the movies are broadcasted with original audio track and there usually is one lector speaking a voice-over in Polish (for all characters in the movie!).
However, I also don't believe that localization (for absolutely everything ) as we have it in Germany is the right way as it leads to rather poor average English skills among the population and even the better educated social stratum. A German really has to force oneself (e.g. using English versions of software, books and movies instead of the localized versions) to reach a non-embarassing level of English.
