Try to speak english dude!

Hi everybody !

First of all something about me. I spend one month in Los Angeles, CA while traveling along the westcoast, including San Francisco, San Diego (this city was suprising !! positivily) and last but not least Las Vegas. Although it was just one month, I really become acquainted with the american culture, behaviors and just living.

But to come to the point and the intention of post, I would like to tell slow1 about my experiences I did in Canada. I spend one semester in Vancouver, British Columbia (West Coast), besides travelling within the whole country.

While flying over the country, only the view out of the window of the plane verified my expectations of Canada and even strengthen them. It its just a wonderful country, including the astonishing nature of woods, lakes, mountains and very variegated animal kingdom !

I lived in Maple Ridge, a less beautiful suburb of Vancouver. In the first days I visited Vancouver and I was just amazed how wunderful it is. There is a mixture of modern architecture with consuetudinary, canadian styles. Lovely parks, stunnig beaches, pretty streets with small cafes with a kind of atmosphere u have to experience. I can't really express... It is just a wonderful, lovely city I had never seen before.

But to repsond your questions. As I already mentioned, I travelled through the whole country. Therefore I recommend to take the west coast closer to your plans, besides I rather like to talk english than french ! =)

But in my view, the french speaking population is kind of seperated from the english part. But without any reason. In Quebec there is a very national party ruling aggressively against any integration into the system. They even suggested to get really independent and they are kind of racist against english speaking ppl. - but this besides the fact of the wonderful nature....

But in the case u want to visit the west coast, u should be aware of the fact, that there is a massive amount of asian population. There a just quartes for rich asians, in which nobody speaks english. Same thing in the opposite - there is a kind of "china town" but it is not meant for tourists or even public. The Asians aspired as well the position of the criminals.

Regarding the temperature I would rather prefer the west coast. In the summer it is very hot in comparison to european standards and in the winter its very cold. But this difference makes it interesting - in the summer u can go swimming in the ocean and even on the same day u can go skiing in the mountains nearby. For example Whistler, a very popular place to be for many celebrities like Tom Cruise, is just 2 hours to go from Vancouver.

In the case you want more things in detail just ask me !

I really like reading this thread, besides the fact, that there is a very large difference between speaking and writing, which let me think about the way I wrote this :evillol:

Have a nice evening ! So long !

I study at the University of Brunswick. They also offer different english courses and I think to take part in one of them. Though I prefer series like Familiy Guy, Akte X or Star Trek in english, I have to listen very carefully.

So, what is the best way to learn the smalltalk and the business english? Take part in one of the courses or learn for myself with software, books and exercises?

The best way I would say, is to cut the crap like family guy etc and watch some good tv programs that use good english.
Discovery Channel, History Channel or even just the simple CNN News.
Anything is better than that family guy crap.

So you think it is adversarial to learn the simple english which is used in Family Guy? The formal language is also necessary, but isn't it more important to talk confidently ?

I agree with meph!sto. Due to the fact, that I watch every movie in english (and I do watch a lot of films!), I'm able to speak using very colloquial and informal forms like "ain't" or "gonna" etc. Sometimes, an "ain't" slips out when I talk to my english-teacher... And this ain't (there we go ;)) cool or something like that, it sucks. Cause in "Matura" (=Abi), which I have in about 3 weeks, I got to speak formal english, and I'm not used to it.

So you probably better listen to news on the radio in english or sth. like that, cause they always talk a "good" english.

I've learned a lot smalltalk by playing games like Elder Scrolls or GTA.
Sometimes I take a look at the news at cnn or bbc.

But at the moment its too early for english...

Later folks^^

im very active in some english speaking forums (mostly gaming communities - who dont favour the formal english at all, but it helps me to get a better sense for common used phrases and stuff like this).

Allthough i dont like watching movies in english (im so familiar with the german voices - i feel like a stranger when i hear the actors original voice) and ive never been in an english speaking country, i think i have a decent understanding for the language, but to be honest better in writing then in understanding the spoken word (especialy when it comes down to horrible accents)

My fellow mates at these forums attest me a very good understanding of what they want to tell me and a pretty surprising good skill in english at all. They told me, most people dont even come close to this (which surprises me again). Some even thought im actualy a englishman.

But well, these forums are spread with people from various countries so i guess the average demand of english skills is not as high as in the university of oxford. ;)

Due to this i more and more catch myself at using english abbreviations and phrases in german boards, or even in Real-Life talk like: anyway, to be honest, cant be arsed, for ur interest and things like this.

But hey, i like these terms so im glad to have a proper activity on english speaking forums as it definately favours ur english skill.

Regards

hey MrMojo,
your english is really pretty nice :) I neither was in an english speaking country but due to my academic career i am able to read, write and speak in this language. Unfortunately practising speaking english is possible for me in a very limited way. As a result my ability to speak won't get better at all. In my job speaking english is very recommended cause many seminars and meetings are in english. Hearing and understanding is not a problem, but if i have to say something, this often ends in a slow and stuttering conversastion. Learning by doing is the only way to improve this problem.

Finally i have a funny sentence, which amused me when i used a translation program in 1999 or so:

ich weiss es nicht! - I white it not
:)

thanks, but urs seems fine for me too :D

The problem u mentioned about slow and stuttering conversations i do also struggle with. The problem is that i dont know as much words as i know in german (no wonder) so its often hard for me to find THE word which describes a situation or a thing the best way. But i also do Voice Chats with some of them which gives definatly a good pratice for this. Its hard to explain why, because u obviously dont learn that much more words, but in some way it improves the flow of speaking.
If u get the chance give it a try and ull see.

I am pretty surprised by the amount of users who are able to speak (or maybe just write =) ) a nice, readable and understable English. Considering this a german board, i don't take it for granted to meet other users with an extremely good knowledge of the english language.

keep the good work up ;)

It's nice to read the Thread. Some of you have a very good and understanding English. I learnd english in School and if or when i have Time I watch TV or read a Book. Some Times I use English also for the Business.

If you want to try "hard stuff" (local dialect), try the film "51st State of America" with Samuel L. Jackson in English.

Mostly, it takes place in Liverpool (England) and the majority of actors comes from that area.

I have watched it once; and I have watched it several times after that to get the points out of it.

I thought, my efforts in English were a mere waste until some English friends calmed me down, stating that even ordinary Englishmen have problems understanding this tongue. :freak:

Cheers

what i do notice is, due to my activity on the english forums, my german orthographie goes nuts.. Im talking here especialy about the capitalization rules and my habbit to write almost everything in lower case, coz u surely now, in english u write almost everything in lower case.. I got so familiarized with that, that I just dont notice it anymore.

@reeyparrot

thank you for your response. i have heard a lot of ggod things about the west coast and about the criminal activities which are very bad. but the thing is that every one wants to go the better west coast. the east coast offers a lots of job oppurtunities because of the dying amout of people who wants to live there.
which places would you recommend on the east coast?
you wrote that you had travelled around the entire country. would you say that the rumours are true about what i have written about the west coast and the east coast.

Oh nice! I didn't know that ForumBase has a English thread only! :)

I've been studying English for 6 Month in UK Margate (Kent) and graduated the FCE with Grade C. I'm trying to keep my English up to date by playing Games with English language only. It's quite hard, but good training as well. Anyway, it's amazing to see how people here have a good handling with English.

If your job don't let you even a chance...
Sometimes funny things happen like... you came back home from work,
speaking the whole day english, you try to chill out, play some games...
in english and a (german) friend calls in and you talk to him... in english.

Sometimes people get a bit confused^^

Wow, this topic is a really good idea.
I am still learning English at school (4th year), so please don't blame me for my mistakes ;)
What I would like to know, is if there are any people using this topic, who can't speak german.

Just as an additional information: German is also a foreign language for me ;)
Vote for a "Try to speak Luxemburgish" Topic ;P

Luxemburgerish? Isn't that Dutch or something like that? :D

Hey Guys

at first awesome to have a thread like this. My whole life english took part. I started learning english when I was in 4th grade. The actuator for this has been my amiga 500+ with the game Police Quest. In order to master that piece of art I had to learn english of course. By the Way my 2 cousins come from Great Britain but I rather stick to american english and pronunciation. Hate this british accent. So now back to the lecture at hand does anyone have the same phenomenon if you read english texts e.g. you instantly understand but if you have to translate them to german you can't exactly or if somebody tells you something in english you understand but can't repeat it exactly in german language ?
