I received my second unit, this time a newer unit of January manufacture date as opposed to November. I have spent ~two weeks with this monitor now and will outline my experience below. Before I do that however, I would just like to provide my specs for anyone interested.
Windows 10 64 bit
i7-3770 @ 3.4Ghz
16GB Gskill ram
Asus sabertooth Z77 mobo
XFX Radeon R9 390
Noticeable changes (positive things):
-Freesync flicker has been slightly reduced. Tested without any modification out of the box with the freesync windmill software demo and the ultimate mode was only slightly flickering. Big improvement over the older model.
-Honestly cannot comment on the speakers this time since I just disabled them.
-Color is still fantastic
-No dead pixels
Persistent issues:
Freesync flicker:
Regardless, I think it should still hold true that with a ~$900 product blatantly advertising this feature it should not have this type of issue. I have also considered that my card may be straddling the cut off point for freesync in some games so I put on my research hat and tried some testing. I went ahead and tested on lower settings in multiple games (payday 2, witcher 3, Doom) and found that it does primarily have to do with the break point of where ultimate freesync kicks in at 48hz. I went ahead and downloaded the CRU utility that lets you modify the range which freesync kicks in and stably reduced it to 38 hz. This appears to work well and reduces flickering significantly. Still not happy this is a thing to begin with though.
